Detroit Was the Place
David DiChiera had a vision. When he chose downtown Detroit to build MOT’s home, he saw the future of the city he would help shape. A half-century later, the DOH is an icon of culture — host to MOT’s main stage opera and ballet seasons, the MOT Studio training program, a resident professional orchestra and chorus as well as a critically acclaimed children’s chorus, year-round dance training, and an array of summer youth activities.

Champion of Diversity and Emerging Artists
Championing works that connected with Detroit’s diverse cultural heritage, David brought us Anoush, Treemonisha, Margaret Garner, Frida and The Passenger. MOT also developed long-standing relationships with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and the Dance Theatre of Harlem. David’s recently established Michigan Opera Theatre Studio provides training and performance opportunities for emerging artists, preparing them for the international stage.
