Rackham Choir, under the direction of Julian Goods, opens its season celebrating creativity by honoring one of history’s most imaginative and innovative thinkers, Leonardo Da Vinci. “A Flight of Imagination” explores themes of imagination, discovery, dreams, and flight and features The Notebooks of Leonardo DaVinci, a multi-media piece by a contemporary female composer, Jocelyn Hagen.

In the piece, Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks are brought to life through his words and drawings in an unforgettable multimedia concert experience created for choir with chamber orchestra and video projections. The video component utilizes exciting new musical technology that has its operator acting as an integrated member of the ensemble, coordinating the video in real time under the conductor’s direction. Watch the video here.

Other pieces on the program for “A Flight of Imagination” include:

Sogno di Volare by Christopher Tin, a two-time Grammy winning composer, uses Leonardo’s own words to evoke feelings of soaring inspiration.

Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine by Eric Whitacre is a beautiful tone poem capturing the feeling of flight in open air.

Flight Song by Kim Andre Arnesen celebrates the uplifting nature of song.

Alleluia by Randall Thompson is a transcendent a capella prayer that is both familiar and haunting.
